My search for a router
So my todo list at the moment is a bit crazy. Right now it’s sitting at about 30 odd things I need todo this week, and heaven knows the rest.
Anyway, the one that really needs to be done is replacing my home router. We use DSL for internet, but the modem router we have from the DSL company is terrible. Just down right dreadful.
When I redid the network a couple of years ago we go a DLink cable router and that ran the network perfectly. No major dropouts, no problems and it didn’t need to be reset every day and a half.
Great, until 2 weeks ago when the router died after a lightbulb tripped the circuit breakers (not uncommon in my house) and router died. I tried a power cycle, reset, the whole nine yards - but it’s dead.
So now everything is back on the modem router, so speeds are down and I have to keep resetting the piece of junk every couple of hours. After 2 weeks of using it, this can’t go on. So I’m looking for a new router again.
So when I started to look (when I was mean’t to be studying for my exams) I came across this from Marco Arment. Yes I would love to go for an embedded system but I can’t justify it. The price is astronomical and we’re heavy users but not that heavy. So, this isn’t filling me with confidence.
Looking at amazon there reviews seem to be pointing towards either a unmanaged switch (which is not what I need), a couple year old Netgear (not really what I’m wanting) and a couple of TP-Link models (which I believe is a far eastern manufacturer as I’ve never head of the them).
Looking on gdgt, they point me towards either an Asus model or a TP-Link model. Considering I mostly know Asus as a laptop maker I’m hesitant of buying from them. And with the TP-Link, its a bit of deja vu here.
So that’s where I am. I really make a decision this week though on what to get. Heck, I might even go for another DLink again…
